Cette image relate le mythe de la fille de Jupiter et de Cérès, déesse du printemps. Proserpine fut enlevée par son oncle Pluton qui l’emmena aux Enfers pour l’épouser. Sa mère, déesse de la moisson, la chercha en vain sur la terre jusqu’à ce que le dieu Soleil lui dise où elle se trouvait. Dans une folle colère, elle déclencha une sécheresse et une famine parmi les hommes. Pour y mettre fin, Jupiter ordonna à Mercure d’aller chercher sa fille, et décida qu’elle devait passer une partie de l’année avec sa mère parmi les vivants, et l’autre partie avec son époux aux Enfers. 

This image relates the myth of the daughter of Jupiter and Ceres, the goddess of spring. Proserpine was kidnapped by her uncle Pluto, who took her to the Underworld to marry her. Her mother, the goddess of the harvest, searched the earth for her in vain until the Sun god told her where she was. In a fit of rage, she unleashed a drought and famine among mankind. To put an end to this, Jupiter ordered Mercury to fetch his daughter, and decided that she should spend part of the year with her mother among the living, and the other part with her husband in the Underworld.
